The cornerstone of the Duomo was laid in 1290 by Pope Nicholas IV and work on it began in the Romanesque style. The first architect is widely held to be Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect responsible for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, one of Florence's most famous landmarks.
