Aerospace fighters in battletech don't seem to work that way. They can take direct hits from missiles, cannon fire, that would absolutely destroy any modern aircraft. A 105mm High explosive tank shell would leave any modern jet a pile of twisted metal, but would barely scratch aerospace fighter armor.
